Should you narrow your podcasting niche?

Podcasting niche! Whether you are starting a new podcast, blog, or even a business, it is important you niche your focus. When the term niching is heard, it doesn’t only scare us, it gets us confused when we try to implement it. Not to worry, we will cover steps that make it non-frightening and less confusing.

Does it make your podcast more relevant to your specific audience? Oh yes, it does! Because without it, it’s very hard to get noticed. More importantly, you want to be producing something people will be looking for. That will help you grow a dedicated and interactive group of listeners.

What is a narrowed podcasting niche?

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let’s make sure we understand the meaning of a podcast niche.

A straight forward definition,

“A podcasting niche is a specialized section of a broader podcast category”. In other words, narrowing your podcast niche simply means digging deeper into a particular category.

For example; a podcasting niche under the category of health could be ‘food & nutrition’, ‘Endocrine System’, ‘Pregnancy and Reproduction’ etc.

But a narrowed niche could be food & nutrition for a pet dog, pregnancy & reproduction for a pet cat, etc. Niching down doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck talking about one thing for the rest of your life, it means finding a filter for your content.

How to narrow your podcasting niche

Are you ready to take advantage of a narrowed podcasting niche? Let us hear you say, Yea Yea!

If you’re interested in Pregnancy and Reproduction but you don’t have a profile in that industry it can be very difficult to compete with people who do.  That doesn’t mean it’s impossible but you’ve got a much steeper hill to climb than if you find a narrower niche to stake your claim on.

But if you’re experienced in the reproduction of pet dogs, you could create a podcast show called, “Reproduction for pet dogs”.

This title immediately gives the content some personality but it also appeals to anyone who is interested in mating their pet dog with a different pet breed.

That kind of message is what makes someone who’s never heard of you stop, take notice and read or listen.
However, you may feel the narrowed-niche ‘Reproduction for pet dogs’ is too small. Believe me, a thousand topics could emerge from it if you have a lot of experience in the field.

Can your podcast niche get too narrow?

Sadly yes! Your podcast niche could get too narrowed.

But how do you know if it has gotten too narrow? A few ways to check are;

  1. You can’t come up with 50 episode topics.
  2. You research the new topic or sub-avatar group and there just aren’t enough people who qualify.
  3. Someone tried before and had to up-niche to make it work.

If any of these are true, you might want to go one level up in your niching. When you are able to narrow your podcast niche to the right balance, you’ll end up with a much more loyal and engaged audience.
